I look forward every year to photographing Belfast Pride, as it’s such a lovely day filled with young people (of all ages) expressing themselves and celebrating the joy of being alive and a sense of community. As a portrait photographer my instincts are to focus in on individuals within the parade, especially those to have made a special effort with their costume and makeup.
Photographically it is of course visually stunning parade to photograph and most participants enjoy posing for me. Northern Ireland has moved on from the dark days of my early life were a person could be imprisoned for being gay and many people just left NI for the brighter lights of `London. Thankfully those days are largely gone now.
